Sarbani is the founder and CEO of Sarbani NYC. Originally from Delhi, India, she has lived in New York for about 20 years.
Friends have always told Sarbani that she has great taste and a stellar sense of style. She finally decided to put her eye for style and passion for fashion to work by creating a multi-designer store specializing in modern Indo-Western jewelry, accessories, and statement pieces.
“It’s an underserved segment in North America, and through Sarbani NYC I’m able to address that need,” Sarbani explained of her decision for bringing this jewelry to market.
Bringing her dream to life, however, has not come without its challenges.
“It’s a very saturated and competitive market. The challenge so far has been to get the word out there, which we’ve been working on through our marketing efforts,” Sarbani stated. “Our goal is to educate audiences about who we are and what we offer. We want people to know how our designers and their creations truly stand out.”
Sarbani is not easily deterred, stating her confidence that people will come to appreciate the unique products and shopping experience she offers once they are able to see the jewelry for themselves.
But what, exactly, is driving her pursuit?
Sarbani was drawn to jewelry because of its significance in her culture.
She said that in India, jewelry means different things to different people. To some, it’s an investment, especially with gold and diamond jewelry. To others, it’s a keepsake or heirloom, passed down from one generation to the next.
“Your look is not complete without jewelry. It adds glamor and drama, and can speak to your personality and taste,” Sarbani said. “Dressing up is really special and important, and the accessories are an essential part of that.”
“I’ve always been fascinated by jewelry,” she added, recalling her own childhood. “I grew up seeing my mom, aunts, and grandmother wear jewelry for special occasions. They’ve always taken such pride in the pieces they wear.”
Sarbani continued, “For some special occasions, they would even buy new jewelry or have pieces specially made by a jewelry designer.” This, she said, involved them spending hours sitting with the family jeweler to infuse each piece with their own personal touch.
She then explained how Indian families will use the same jeweler for generations. This allows people to get to know their designer to the point where they can show the jeweler their exact vision and trust that they will receive the high-quality product they were expecting.
Sarbani hopes to create something similar for her clientele. “That’s the kind of experience I want for our customers. I want them to trust that when they invest in a piece from Sarbani NYC, they are receiving a unique, handcrafted, high-quality product.”
From Sarbani’s inspiration and background bloomed a business idea. She saw room for a creative solution that would deliver new options to two segments.
“As a native of India, I’ve seen first hand how South Asian luxury fashion jewelry trends have evolved through the years along with an increase in demand on a global level,” Sarbani said. “Unfortunately, boutiques are limited in their reach and the popular e-commerce destinations are burdened with a lack of quality control, long lead times, and a poor overall customer experience.”
Her twofold solution? On one side, she would provide South Asian jewelry designers with a platform and representative that would make it possible for them to enter the U.S. market. On the other side, she would offer a brand new product selection to customers searching for fresh, modern statement jewelry and accessories. This includes everything from statement earrings and necklaces to hand harnesses and foot jewelry.
Sarbani discussed what her shop offers that sets it apart from other U.S. luxury jewelry retailers.
“We take a lot of time to select our designers and pieces. We don’t want to compromise on the quality of the jewelry, so we do a lot of research on each brand,” she stated.

As she mentioned earlier, Sarbani takes a great deal of pride in the research and time that goes into selecting her jewelry designers.
“The jewelers we bring on board are known for their uniquely creative designs. We handpick each designer and also get to know how their entire team operates, from the artisans to the marketing department,” Sarbani said.
“How involved are the designers with their artisans and processes? What goes into those processes? What makes these jewelers and their designs unique? These are all questions we keep in mind as we learn about each designer,” Sarbani continued.
“But above all else, we find out how far they will go to create something new and unlike anything currently on the market. I’m most interested in this and their attention to detail.”
Things are picking up for Sarbani NYC—with no signs of slowing down.
“We’re very excited to begin our trunk shows next month,” Sarbani said.
“We’ll be collaborating with other curators and designers who we believe will be a great fit for our clientele here in the U.S. We are positive that once our shoppers are able to see and feel these beautiful products in person, they’ll simply fall in love with them,” Sarbani said enthusiastically.

When looking to the future, Sarbani has a big vision.
“I see us growing and doing more trunk shows nationwide,” she stated. “We also intend to add more designers and product categories in the near future. I really look forward to introducing new and up-and-coming designers to our clientele. I’m even considering adding fine jewelry to our line-up.”
And a little further down the line (and even bigger picture)?
“I aim to take the bold step of opening stores in every major city throughout the U.S.”
What Sarbani is most excited about at the moment, however, is the opportunity to connect with clients and creating a personal shopping experience through the trunk shows.
“I’m very optimistic about taking the experience from an online setting to a personal one. This will give our customers the chance to see this stunning jewelry and how much hard work has been put into these pieces that they will wear for years to come.”
“Of course, I also love talking to people and educating them about the jewelry and the history behind it. I think it’s all about learning and sharing experiences,” Sarbani concluded.
